Presenting RAIN - RApid INnovation
Dirk Palder,
vice president member of the global distribution team,
Capgemini,
Germany
After finishing the first global Postal Innovation Study, we learned that management of the innovation process and commercialisation are key issues to optimise for the future. Based on the Capgemini experience in other industries, we will demonstrate RAIN (Rapid Innovation Process) as a solution for faster product launches. In the RAIN process, Capgemini is working with 400-500 start-up companies mostly from California but also from France and Asia. Introducing these highly innovative companies to traditional multi-nationals or postal operators makes the difference, as does the collaborative approach. Finally we will show why Business Model Innovation (BIM) will force a change of culture from MAKE to COLLABORATE. To gain a better understanding, participants will have the chance to visit our 'mini-RAIN' centre in the Consulting Corner.

How to launch a new electronic postal service in 90 days
Zafar Khan,
CEO,
Rpost,
USA
Eugenie Simmons,
head of corporate services,
Bermuda Postal Service,
Bermuda
With acknowledged declines in mail, posts have begun to more aggressively explore how to create sustainable profits from the electronic mailstream. But is it too late? Electronic transactions laws, in place in most countries, govern the legalities of email, not UPU. ISPs are entrenched in email operations globally, with few ties to local geography. This session will demonstrate how a modern post can create meaningful new revenue in light of the above-mentioned challenges and conflicts. The Bermuda Postal Service will present a case study, with RPost, about their decision processes, technology selection and profit/cost to launch a successful new business line for 'Email Proof, Privacy and eSignatures' under the brand of Registered Email services.
Returning to direct mail from digital
Andy Owen,
managing director,
Andy Owen & Associates,
UK
Direct mail is now storming back into marketer's thinking, because of its effectiveness when compared with the disaster that is now email. The knowledgeable marketers out there are turning back to direct mail - in a big way. It's no surprise, for the following reasons: nothing works better than a well-written letter; DM volumes are much smaller now, so stand-out is possible and achievable; DM is tactile, and easier to read and digest than on-screen email; recipients spend more time with DM so the sales message can be more effective. Don't be late! This promises to be something really special from one of world's most respected and popular DM figures.

Ideas and opportunities outside the mail pipeline
Jelmer Jarig Huizinga,
president,
EasyWeigh,
Netherlands
People used to be more interested in NEW business opportunities than OLD business opportunities. Why? In this presentation I will address new and old issues that postal operators are dealing with in a turbulent environment of liberalisation and privatisation. Issues that will be discussed are: cutting cost at post offices, the closing and replacing of them by new formulas, improvement of services, the enhancement of online postage, new product concepts, more effective postal marketing campaigns, upcoming marketplaces and preferred supplier ship. An 'old' issue has become 'new' again: revenue protection. EasyWeigh presents its contribution to the abovementioned issues in a surprisingly simple, proven and effective manner, with examples from your fellow competitors over the past 10 years.

Israel
According to ABI research, M2M-enabled products for the postal sector are expected to grow 22% year-over-year by 2014. This growth is driven by the increasing demand for accurate, real-time data and reduced operational costs, regardless of location or distance. While mobile computing terminals and fleet-management systems are the dominant M2M applications in today's postal sector, the market is undergoing further technological innovations in the areas of cellular-based tracking devices to monitor shipments in real-time, and pack 'collection' stations to receive and dispatch parcels around the clock.

Mail automation in the age of declining volumes
Massimo Mortola,
marketing manager,
Elsag Datamat,
Italy
The economic crisis in 2009 accentuated the downward trend in letter volumes, as they are replaced by other forms of information transmission and, in large areas, eroded by ever-increasing deregulation and competition. In this context, postal operators have in general reduced their investment budgets in traditional sectors, targeting small investments for the most part and aiming at solutions that guarantee a clear and substantial reduction in the cost of labour, as well as shifting the focus onto expansion in the package market. The presentation describes Elsag Datamat's response to this trend, from new-generation letter sorter integration systems, to sustainable flat sorting and the new low-consumption package sorting machine.

FedEx Ground is the ground transportation arm of FedEx Corp in the United States. It operates a highly efficient network that strives for total network visibility as it processes over three million parcels each day. The deployment of some of the world's most advanced material handling and scanning technologies has helped the company achieve a goal of minimal handling and maximum automation. These technology deployments have been possible, in part, due to strong partnerships with providers of automated data collection system solutions. One such partner of FedEx Ground is SICK. FedEx Ground and SICK have worked together in recent years to integrate high-end ADC (Automated Data Collection) system solutions with the FedEx Ground back-end infrastructure. The result has been a marked improvement in visibility to the operations of a network of large automated hub facilities.

Condition-based maintenance-cutting operational costs
Jinan Aboushakra,
CEO,
CODE Plus,
USA
In the current context of the economic downturn combined with the ongoing decrease of mail volume, postal operators face the challenge of optimally assigning their available resources in order to cut operational costs. Consequently, it is critical for postal operators to be able to rationalise their maintenance costs while ensuring the best system utilisation without jeopardising quality of services. Since system maintenance comes as a fixed cost, the challenge for service providers comes in forecasting machine utilisation and cutting operational maintenance costs accordingly. With a postal activity monitoring application, postal decision makers now have a tool to implement dynamic condition-based maintenance that allows for monitoring and optimisation of machine utilisation based on current operations. This presentation will illustrate how a postal activity monitoring tool provides condition-based maintenance, and will discuss its added value in comparison with failure- and reactive-based maintenance.
Predictive emulation for the postal service's right sizing and optimal costing
Nabil AbuElAta,
president/CEO,

Alain Roset,
head of R&D,
La Poste,
France
Postal services face major challenges: economic, technical, technological. Moreover, they are reviewing their traditional business model and its associated value proposition due to several transformational changes. In addition, over a number of years the evolution of postal services has involved large and detailed complexity (millions of components involved), as well as dynamic complexity (dependencies, combinatorial and many feedback processes such as the one forming the stock should be carefully managed). In this contribution we will discuss such challenges and show how we are able to face them with a high level of confidence through the use of mathematical emulation that can deal with such size and dynamic complexity to drive strategic and operational options.

Posttude - a new postal code for the world
Richard Abas,
chief geodude,
Geotude & POS Malaysia,
Malaysia
Pos Malaysia Berhad (Malaysia National Postal Agency), and the Malaysian government's Multimedia Commission (the regulator in Malaysia), together with Geotude Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian company, have been collaborating to develop a system for rural citizens who do not currently have mail delivered to their homes and businesses. This system, called Posttude, utilises research and development of the Geotude concept. Posttude is a 5+4+4 numerical geocode that identifies a unique 10x10 meter grid on earth. Posttude is calculated using latitude and longitude to convert the pair into a single string. It is a mathematical formula that requires no look up. It can be used by anyone, anywhere. In Copenhagen Posttude will showcase the implementation of the system in Semporna, a remote village in Sabah, Malaysia, where Pos Malaysia was experiencing difficulties in addressing points of deliveries. One reason for the addressing problem was the fact that a large number of people had traditionally built dwellings on the water with no traditional streets. The occupants - numbering tens of thousands - previously shared about half a dozen post office boxes.
